INVITE-ONLY EVENING AT GALERIE SECHS • BASEL

A painting changes the more you know. So do people.

Going beyond the first impression...

October, 2026

Reading a painting and reading people's motives & behaviors share the same root.

Both are projections of our own filters: experience, cultural bias, education, the era we grew up in. Original or fake. Worth attention or not worth it.

Your are invited.

No art background needed.

Your job is to manage teams, experienced professionals, international experts and stakeholders across the globe. And misreading people in high-stakes situations costs more than it should.

How often do we mistake our first impression for objective reality?

I asked a friend what she thought of Helen Frankenthaler's work.

She was scrolling through the artist's page. Her first reaction sounded like a verdict.

--

“Very derivative. She looks like other people.”

When she heard her real story and learnt more about technique she invented, I noticed the change.

On second look, she saw the painting differently.

Nature Abhors a Vacuum, 1973, H. Frankenthaler. National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

With people it’s the same…

Someone is devoted, or stubborn, or modest — or reminds you of someone you didn't get on with. That first snapshot becomes your lens on them.

What looks like a weakness through your filters is often a strength read wrong.

Self-Confidence, too often…

and people see you as ARROGANT — the smartest person in the room no one wants to collaborate with.

Stubborn, read wrong, is…

PERSEVERING. The strength that helps staying the course, and finishing what everyone else gave up on.

Too much Tolerance…

makes others read you as INDIFFERENT: — no opinion of your own, no preferences.

  • "Galerie give us a unique opportunity to go beyond first impressions. With every guided tour and every curator's story, you get more clues and more angles from which to see, feel and relate to art."

-- Huan Cao, Galerie Sech Owner

  • "Knowing more about someone’s reasons changes how we interpret their words and actions”

    -- Just an idea

  • "Checking your “read” before you act on it — that's the part we all miss. We act on the first read and move on. For leaders, that costs a lot more than a misread painting."

-- Diana Cherniavska, Relationship Intelligence™ Coach

Our evening, at a glance.

We open inside Mind Is Not a Machine with selected work and the context and the clues curator would give you that make a second look possible.

A guided tour.

You'll see how little it takes to shift they way we see painting, the artist, the process behind it, when asking right questions.

Three Questions.

We curate a second look and this time on people. We read strengths through your filters first, then through someone else's angle.

Same Lens. People.

What you leave with

  • A skill you'll use on Monday

You keep the three questions. They worked on a painting; they work the same on your own strengths and on the people you work with.

  • A map with your ten strengths

You'll map your ten strengths and discover how often they build trust, and the price you pay for overdoing them.

  • A room worth coming back to

Leaders and professionals who look twice, then judge once. Some of them stay in touch.
